HEAL Essentials Certificate: Public Health Approaches to Human Trafficking

This virtual training examines human trafficking through a public health lens, exploring root causes, prevention strategies, and the role of health systems in meaningful response. Part of the HEAL Essentials Certificate in Anti-Trafficking Response.

If you’re looking for a clear, practical foundation for understanding how public health approaches apply to human trafficking, this course is for you.

Public Health Approaches to Human Trafficking is part of the HEAL Essentials Certificate in Anti-Trafficking Response—a structured learning program designed to build core knowledge and real-world skills for professionals working across healthcare, public health, and allied systems. Each training can be taken individually or as part of the full certificate program.

Course Overview

Human trafficking is shaped by structural inequities, policy gaps, and systems that can increase vulnerability rather than reduce it. This live virtual training applies a public health framework to help participants understand risk, resilience, and the conditions that enable exploitation.

Participants will explore how healthcare and public health intersect with trafficking across the continuum—from prevention to response—and how survivor-centered, trauma-informed approaches can be embedded into systems-level work.

In this training, you will:

  • Explain human trafficking as a preventable public health issue using established frameworks
  • Analyze how structural inequities shape population-level vulnerability and resilience
  • Differentiate primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies and identify key intervention points
  • Apply survivor-centered, trauma-informed principles that center agency, choice, and safety
  • Identify multidisciplinary and policy-level strategies that support long-term systems change

About the HEAL Essentials Certificate

Participants who complete all four trainings earn the HEAL Essentials Certificate.

The Foundations training is recommended as a starting point for those who are new to human trafficking, have not had training in several years, or are looking for a refresher.
